Thatched Cottage – Fire Safety Advice

Updated: Jan 30

As with any property, fire is an ever present risk. This is particularly so when talking about properties with thatch type roof coverings!

The risk of a fire is is further exacerbated as the majority of thatched buildings are older properties and as such most likely have open fires and/or wood or multi-fuel buring stoves/heating appliances to add to the ambiance of the building.

As with any naked flame appliance, in particular when coming into contact with a fuel source, such as dry thatch in a roof space in particular, the risk of ignition and subsequent fire is very high. This is particularly so if flues and/or fireplaces are not adequately protected to prevent flames, heat and/or sparks coming into contact with the thatch roof coverings.

We have found a very useful leaflet that explains the risks of fire in thatched properties and you can download a copy of this by visiting the link shown on this button. FIRE SAFETY
